New Face of Pakistan Cinema |
It is all good and positive and will create a marketing niche
for Films of Pakistan in near future. But it is time to think over the fact as
if we are having or trying to develop our own stamped face of cinema. If we are
making a huge investments in movies, post production, music and rest of digital
technology then we need to know where we are heading for. If it is the typical
spicy movie track that is imported from Bollywood then it is not a wise deal.
Having a very distinctive identity and moral and cultural
values. It is the basic right of people of Pakistan to watch films that depict
their lives. A social drama that is driven around their lives in one way or
other. I agree with that age old notion that cinema is a “Dream Machine”. But
now the world is changing and we see that all countries who have a good craft
of cinema have the distinctive qualities. You can see the sci-fi thriller and propaganda
movies of Hollywood. Then a very
close to life movies from China and Iran that pull millions of cinemagoers
all around the globe.
It seems a ridiculous effort to catch and grab the audience
attention with the same kinds of no plot movies with bulk of songs and “Item
Numbers with Vulgar Dances”. A concept and theory imported from neighbouring
India. Yeah! They are good at that and have developed a certain face in the whole
world. Movie lovers watch the Bollywood
and Tollywood movies for same kind of
spice, thriller and charming music that most popular heroines perform.
Here it is a time for our movie makers to study the world
cinema deeply and see how French
movies are different in every aspect from Italian
and Spanish films. All have a class
and they have same genre to cater the audiences. You see the Pakistan television drama has always
been distinctive and recognized world over, and especially in India for great
stories, subliminal lesson oriented stories with real lives and the great
directorial masterpieces.
If we can do that for Pakistani drama then I think it is
time to say yes to great productions like “Waar” only two years back and big NO
to films like Wrong Number, Karachi Se
Lahore and rest of the same class and cult. It is not a time when
filmmakers can have a lame excuse that public wants this and that. They have to
develop their taste, and remember that “Waar” was quite a unique film for
Pakistani audiences. Our film industry already collapsed due to formula films
that went for decades, and now we do not want to see “Jawaani Phir Nahin Aani”
with just glamour, gloss and bulk of theatrical humor and dance numbers. Stay
tuned!!
